COMMUNITY AT THE BASE | THE BASE
Lifestyle01 March 2022
We love our communities! You’re doing great things out there and we are stoked to be able to help. Here’s a few of our ongoing initiatives:
SPACE TO CHANGE ADULT CHANGE ROOM
Our Space to Change fully accessible adult change room provides the equipment and space people with more complex disabilities need to enjoy a full day out. Developed in partnership with Project Brave and Community Living, this facility includes full-sized adjustable changing table, hoist (bring your own sling), shower and wash up facilities and adjustable height toilet and basin, all housed in a space thoughtfully designed to accommodate larger wheelchairs and care assistants.
You can find this amenity on level 1 at the Hoyts end of the centre, between Jagotown and the vaccination centre. Read more about other accessibility features here
MATCH HERO
The Base is a long-time supporter of youth sport in the Waikato through our Match Hero programme, currently supporting intermediate and secondary level hockey.
Regardless of whether you win or lose the game, there is always a Match Hero – that player with grit and resilience, the dogged defender, the player always in the right place at the right time or the leader who keeps everyone going with encouragement and support. We equip coaches with certificates acknowledging hard work, progression and attitude that our Heroes bring into centre to receive a gift card.
Team sport is not only an excellent way to build the physical fitness and wellbeing of our tamariki, but also invaluable in teaching teamwork and cooperation, developing resilience and supporting mental health. So we love rewarding our Match Heroes for their efforts!
SAFE SPACE ALLIANCE
We’re part of the Safe Space Alliance, providing physical and digital spaces where the LGBTQI+ community can express themselves without fear.
Our staff are here to help! Seek support from our management, customer service and security staff at any time.
BE.LAB PLATINUM RATED
We are Be.Lab Platinum rated for accessibility and continually strive for a more accessible and inclusive experience for everyone.
If you require assistance or have suggestions, please feel free to contact one of our management, customer service or security staff in-centre or contact us
GIFTWRAPPING FROM VOLUNTEERING WAIKATO
Each Christmas, we partner with Volunteering Waikato to provide giftwrapping to customers in return for a gold coin donation. 100% of donations go to Volunteering Waikato to match individuals and corporates with volunteering opportunities year-round, benefitting over 300 local charities and not-for-profit organisations.

BILINGUAL SIGNAGE
Ako! Bilingual and Te Reo Maaori signage is featured around the site, increasing exposure, providing learning opportunities and normalising Te Reo Maaori. Try them out with friends and whaanau or challenge the kids as you shop.
We are proud to work in partnership with Waikato Tainui who built The Base, integrating many beautiful cultural features into the architecture and design of the site. Check out those features on our Taonga Trail – look for the QR code floor decals or read more here
JUSTICE OF THE PEACE
Every Saturday, we host a Justice of the Peace service. Get your documents signed and witnessed – no appointment needed and free of charge.
Find them between Farmers and Muffin Break (inside Te Awa) every Saturday from 10am – 12noon.
